If you don't know Red Dwarf, this will make no sence to you...

Since the start of my love affair with LOST, I have noticed that there are more than just a few themes that tie directly in to the BBC SCI-FI Comedy, Red Dwarf.

To name a few but by no means all of them...
*Hurley - Luck Virus
*Smokie - Ploymorph
*Future echos - Corse Correction
*Cassandra - Mrs Hawking
*JMC rations - DHARMA food
*Quarintene - Quarintene(HA! go figure)
*Locke - Rimmer, and hopefully Locke will grow enough to become Ace Rimmer by the end of the series(What a guy!)
*Others - Simulants/Gelfs

I could go on and on but I really believe it would give away too much at this point.

But one that did just occour to me that seems important is Jack being Lister, let me explain.

I have been hearing on line and from friends that a common theory is that Jack of all people is in fact Jacob. Oh how I laughed at these people. I thought it was by far the dumbest idea ever. Then I watched S6E3 of Red Dwarf and as much as I hate it, they may be on to something....

Jack is short for Jacob(a name like Jacob Shepard is really laying it on thick, even for Darlton). But that is not what got me to at least listen, it is the cycle theme that they seem to be putting forward. So we see Horace in Locke's dream saying the same thing over and over in a loop or cycle...this was a huge hint IMO.

IF(as many people are starting to think) Jack becomes Jacob, it would be the ultimate red dwarf moment...

*815 crashes in 2004.
*Jack gets off the island.
*When he finially gets back it is on a timeline on the island WAY before DHARMA and all that.
*He lives his life on island and finially passes in the caves(He may be "Adam" from S1)
*His spirit or whatever becomes "Jacob"(short for Jack) just in time for DHARMA and 815 to crash...starting the cycle all over again and again for ever.

Just like Dave lister coming into existance from his own seed in "Ouroboros"

As much as I hate the "Jack is Jacob" theory...this connection lends serious weight to it in my eyes

Thoughts?

I have seen that show before. Nowhere near as in depth as you. But i kinda always thought Adam and Eve in the caves were the Degroots.

That could very well happen and I'd be fine with it as it would be a kind of closure. The Jack/Jacob is also so obvious it can't be a coincidence. Since Jack is technically 'the star' of the show, he was in the first scene, he is the leader, etc. it would only be just that he is Jacob in the end b/c how ELSE is he going to have a happy ending? i don't think so.

I disagree with Jack being Jacob, though it is an interesting thought. Seeing has how lost began with Jack as the center of the universe, I do think the series will end centered on Jack. But here's my take...

(Disclaimer: Part of this idea was previously thought of by others on this forum, so I'm not taking total credit. If I remembered who posted what, I'd give props. However, there are no spoilers here, this just what I think is going to happen.)

Jack will spend s5 and s6 trying to find his way back to the island with no success. He'll eventually track down Faraday who will set his "Eloise" machine to 2.342 and 11hz, ultimately sending Jack's consciousness back in time to September 22, 2004. We'll then end with the close up of Jack's eye opening. He gets up and runs through the jungle to the beach. He sees the carnage from the crash of 815 and runs through the wreckage saving everyone as he did the first time he was there. Thus, Jack gets his wish, to be back on the island and we, the viewers, get to see Boone, Shannon, Charlie, etc. Everyone who we've lost and missed throughout the show. We get our one final bittersweet glimpse as the cycle is about to start over again. Below is what I think the exact final scene will be.

[Shot of a leaf torn into the shape of an airplane.]
JACK [off camera at first]: We must have been at about 40,000 feet when it happened. Hit an air pocket. Dropped, maybe, 200 feet. The turbulence was… I blacked out.
KATE: I didn't. I saw the whole thing. I knew that the tail was gone, but I couldn't bring myself to look back. And then the, the front of the plane broke off.
JACK: Well, it's not here on the beach. Neither is the tail. We need to figure out which way we came in.
KATE: Why?
JACK: Because there's a chance we could find the cockpit. If it's intact, we might be able to find a transceiver. Send out a signal, help the rescue party find us.
KATE: How do you know all that?
JACK: Took a couple flying lessons. Wasn't for me.
KATE: I saw some smoke. Just through the valley. If you're thinking about going for the cockpit, I'm going with you.
JACK: I don't know your name.
KATE: I'm Kate.
JACK: Jack.

(On a side note, Jack will be fine from his conscious traveling because Kate is his constant. She is with him in the future and is with him on the island. I also think it would be interesting if Jack saying he took flying lessons was a reference to him in either s5 or s6 taking flying lessons and attempting to find the island and crash on it. It would definitely make you think twice about EVERYTHING that Jack says and does throughout the entire series.)

In a sense, we are Jack. The viewers are Jack. We want what he wants. To go back to the island as it was. I think that we'll ultimately get that. With Lost ending this way, we are not only satisfied, but the show will come full circle. I can't think of a better way for it to finish.

Don't know about the Red Dwarf thing, certainly the creators of LOST are unoriginal enough to borrow from the best, but Red Dwarf AND Lost (if something like this is true) would be drawing from a deep well that many many shows and stories have borrowed from in the past.

what about kate exactly? just because she doesn't want to be eve doesn't mean she won't become eve. not if that is her fate; should you believe in that sort of thing.

Calling it the poor man's Red Dwarf isn't fair. I mean, the pilot episode of lost probably costed more than the entire series of Red Dwarf.

Red Dwarf did it first.

Red Dwarf did it better.

Not at all, it has to be the pollymorph. It reads your emotions and turns into whatever will exploit you the most. Like if Eko were on Red Dwarf, the pollymorph would turn into, IDK...Yemmy Shocked

Also some more things worth considering...

The dead can come back to life as holograms, eventually becoming solid.

Mutated flu causes hallucinated characters to become real people.

People can swap bodies, with a different person being inside.

Psirens alter perception, and can imitate other characters.

Despair squid releases ink which looks like a cloud of black smoke underwater, causing people to hallucinate.

Legion is a mysterious creature made from the minds of those present. It doesn't allow them to leave as then it ceases to exist.

'Better Than Life' game creates whatever you want like a "magic box".

The Inquisitor judges everyone using their own thoughts, and destroys them if they are not good enough...

The first four Red Dwarf seasons were funny but the rest were awful. Red Dwarf and LOST are nothing alike. The only thing they have in common is that they are both Sci-fi. Red Dwarf did what first? A sci-fi series? I don't think so.
