My theory on the island:

The island (without any DHARMA or HANSO influence) has an unusually high amount of energy in it. I think that because it had such high amounts of that energy it set the vibrations of the island and its surroundings off so that it created it's own "snowglobe" reality dimension. This high amount of energy is why things heal faster and cancer and paralysis and stuff goes away in there.

I think Magnus Hanso stumbled upon the island when he was sailing his slave ship by accidently entering via the bearing of 325 doorway thingy. He lived on the island and discovered it's secrets. Then flash forward to WW2 time. Alvar Hanso is making weapons for people and making a shitload of money. He uses this money to fund a research project to find out about where his grandfather or uncle or whatever, his dead relative MAGNUS HANSO went, after hearing stories about it. The atrocities he witness during WWII also motivates him to find a way to create world peace.

He finds out that MAGNUS HANSO was in the certain specific area and starts looking and eventually stumbles on the hidden island. He creates the DHARMA INITIUTIVE to study the island, and its high energy stuff. They create certain tests, using test subjects to understand the experiment and observe from a distance.

They find a way to open up the snowglobe into the real world (and the island is actually located somewhere in the SOUTH POLE when the snowglobe dimension/reality is opened up into the real world. Polar bears who were swimming, looking for a big chunk of ice to climb on end up swimming into the water which is part of the snowglobe, and end of on the island.) They harness the power of the islands electromagnetism to open it up (using a machine of some sort). This machine or magnet would some how suck in some of the islands exessive energy, lower the vibrational frequencies of the island (and the surrounding water, the whole snowglobe) and the frequencies lower to match that of the REAL WORLD and than exists inside the real world (aka the snowglobe opens up). This is what causes the "incident" in my mind. The magnet/machine thingy builts up far too much energy and it begins to leak #### $#!% up if you know what i mean.

So now in order to keep the island hidden since that #### everything up, they must push that button every 108 minutes, which regulates the release of energy from the magnet into the snowglobes atmosphere. But when it's not pushed......it starts sucking all of the energy and everything back toward it (causes the vibrations to lower and it opens into our world), and thats how the plane landed (it was sucked towards the magnet after it opened the snowglobe up.)

This explains why Desmond sailed for so long in one direction only to find the island again and said the rest of the world had disappeared and there was nothing left. It was because they were still only inside the snowglobe reality thingy. Get it? The button was regulating the high amount of energy that keeps the island and some of its surroundings vibrational frequencies higher than that of the rest of the world.

I THINK (and this is a stretch) that the religion vs science debate in the show plays a huge role in this, and I think this is why:
I think they are going to end up trying to explain God scientifically, by saying something along the lines of that the ISLAND's vibrational frequency is higher and closer to the frequency of God's energy or something. I'm not sure. That's a guess.
